Binnen het Internet Protocol versie 4 (IPv4) wordt een veld genaamd "protocol", gebruikt om het volgende protocolnivo aan te geven.
Het is een 8 bits veld. Binnen Internet Protocol versie 6 (IPv6) wordt dit veld "Next Header" genoemd.
